Wondering what to bring?

If your most recent voter registration was by mail and you have not yet provided identification to an election official, you must either (1) provide one of the following forms of identification showing your name and current address or (2) vote a provisional ballot. (Provisional ballots are not counted on election night; instead, the city council, acting as the board of election canvassers, will decide whether to count each provisional ballot at the election canvass.)

    • Current/valid photo ID
    • Current utility bill
    • Bank statement
    • Paycheck
    • Government check or other official government document

Wondering about other voting options?

If you will be unable to vote early in person or on Election Day (March 5), there is still time to request an absentee ballot. For information about absentee ballots, please visit the city’s elections web page or call the Elkins city clerk, Sutton Stokes, at (304) 636-1414, ext. 1211.

At its regular meeting of February 7, 2013, the Elkins Common Council shortened the early-voting period for the 2013 municipal election. The new early-voting period will begin Wednesday, February 20 and end Saturday, March 2. Voters who were planning to vote early are urged to review their travel plans to see if might be necessary to instead apply for a mail-in absentee ballot. (Download an application here.)

The location for early voting is in the municipal courtroom at Elkins City Hall, 401 Davis Avenue. This location is wheelchair accessible through the rear of city hall.

During the early voting period, voters may cast ballots from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on two Saturdays, February 23 and March 2.

Any eligible voters may vote during the early-voting period just as on election day; no special reason is necessary and no explanation must be given.

Election day is March 5, 2013; polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Voter registration for this election closes on Tuesday, February 12. For more information about city elections, including the location of the polling places for each ward, click here.

Last night, in a special-called meeting, council approved an ordinance that would change the city’s early voting period. This ordinance must be read and approved a second time; the second reading is docketed for the meeting of February 7.

If council approves this ordinance on second reading at that meeting, the new early voting period will be as follows:

February 20-March 2 (includes two Saturdays: Feb. 23 and March 2)

Hours:

  • Monday-Friday: 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • Saturdays: 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

If you have questions, please contact the city clerk: 304-636-1414, ext. 1211.
