Pending Early-Voting Change

Last night, in a special-called meeting, council approved an ordinance that would change the city’s early voting period. This ordinance must be read and approved a second time; the second reading is docketed for the meeting of February 7.

If council approves this ordinance on second reading at that meeting, the new early voting period will be as follows:

February 20-March 2 (includes two Saturdays: Feb. 23 and March 2)

Hours:

• Monday-Friday: 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
• Saturdays: 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Police Civil Service Commission: Agility Tests and Oral Interviews

Police candidates who pass the written exam on Feb. 9 will next take the strength and agility test, which will be administered as follows:

Date: Saturday, February 23

Time: 2:00 p.m.

Location: Elkins High School (100 Kennedy Drive – Elkins, WV  26241)

In case of inclement weather, we have reserved the following backup dates (you will be notified), all at 2-4 p.m.:

Backup dates: Sunday, February 24; Saturday, March 2; Sunday, March 3.

For those who pass both (1) today’s written exam and (2) the strength and agility test, the next step is an oral interview with the Elkins Police Civil Service Commission members.

Interviews will start:

Date: Tuesday, February 26

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: Elkins City Hall (401 Davis Avenue, Elkins, WV  26241)

 Interviews take 20-30 minutes; candidates will be notified of their time slots.

Elkins PD Hiring: Test on Feb. 9

Ever thought of becoming a police officer?

Entry-level Elkins officers receive:

• $27,082 base pay (plus holiday and overtime pay)
• Generous benefits package

After one year, officers receive:

• $31,200 salary (plus holiday, overtime, and longevity pay)
• Take-home police cruiser

All applicants will undergo extensive background investigations and drug, psychological, medical, polygraph, and physical fitness tests. Applicants with criminal convictions, chronic credit delinquency, histories of drug use, or other indications of poor judgment will be rejected. Applicants must be prepared to serve all members of the public with respect and professionalism.

Age requirement: 18-40 years old as of February 9, 2013.

City inspection required before power can be connected

Starting Friday, February 1, 2013, Mon Power will no longer connect new or upgraded electrical service without proof of that an inspection has been performed by the City of Elkins building inspector.

As announced previously, building permits are required before installing/replacing electrical, gas, sewer, or water service.

Building Permits Required for Utility Connections

Please note that state law requires that you obtain building permits before installing/replacing electrical, gas, sewer, or water service. Work must be performed by licensed contractors. Utility companies will no longer connect/reconnect services without proof of inspection by City of Elkins Building Inspector.

Elkins receives grant funding for crosswalks

From the Inter-Mountain:

New faux bricks crosswalks will be installed in downtown Elkins to help improve pedestrian safety and hopefully raise motorists awareness. Funding for the project will come from a $115,920 transportation enhancement grant announced this week.

“I am real excited about it,” Elkins Mayor Duke Talbott said. “It is really going to make downtown beautiful.”
